St Carthage's Community Care has made a commitment to organisational change by starting on our Eden Journey ....

A word from the CEO ....

St Carthage’s Community Care has always strived for excellence in the quality of care we provide to our elders. The Eden Alternative was identified as a philosophy that seamlessly matched our mission, values and goals together with being in harmony with the ethos of the Catholic Church.

As we begin our Eden journey I am delighted to witness and share in the experiences and successes initiated by our motivated care services team. A growing sense of enthusiasm and pride amongst staff at all levels is indicative of the profound change in culture and empowerment developing within the St Carthage’s community.

Geoff Costello
Chief Executive Officer
Eden in Oz & NZ came to St Carthage's from 2 - 4 November to provide a 3 day culture change training course in "Implementing the Eden Alternative in Aged Care". St Carthage’s values the importance of this philosophy and is committed to implementing this across all service areas including services for people with a disability.  We had 29 people attend including Advisory Board Member, CEO, Management, Coordinators, Community Care Workers and Volunteers.

The Eden Alternative is a philosophy of person directed care that addresses the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom.  Eden gives antidotes or solutions to the three plagues which can cause stress to our clients.

At St Carthage’s Community Care we are empowering staff and clients to jointly create opportunities for our care partners to give as well as receive care.  At the same time, we are wanting to bring variety and spontaneity into clients’ lives, by providing more meaningful opportunities through close and continuing contact with plants, pets & children.  We are focused on enabling our clients to continue to live a fulfilling life with meaning and purpose supported by the St Carthage’s community care teams.

After completion of our assessments, we hope to all be Eden Associates by 9 December 2011.

Eden Associates focus on the implementation of the Eden Alternative through the practical application of the 10 Eden Principles in their service.  As part of the Eden Team, we will work towards achieving recognition as an Eden centre of excellence through successful membership to the Eden Registry in Australia and New Zealand.

At the Staff Meeting on 14 November 2011 staff participated in a poster exercise 'Eden Eyes' a tool to look at "What it is" and "What It Ought to be".  Looking at the barriers and solutions to change.  The staff were split into small groups that had a mix of staff who did and didn't attended the Eden Training.  Some of the staff who attended the training gave their 'Elevator Speech' (a quick 2 minute talk to explain Eden) to everyone in their group.
